Dennis Wade Harlan was born in the State of Washington and served a total of 30 years as a federal law enforcement officer. He started his career as an Immigration Patrol Inspector with the U.S. Border Patrol in 1966. In 1970, he became a Special Agent with the U.S. Customs Office of Investigation. He retired in Tucson, Arizona in 1996 and now resides in Cedaredge with his wife, Valerie, of 55 years. These days, he goes by his nickname “Hoot,” a handle

which was given to him by his compadres in Tucson. And, since Valerie’s middle name is Ann, the couple currently live on a property called the “Hoot-n-Annie Ranch.”

Hoot will introduce his new novel, answer questions, and sign copies in the Starr Family Gallery.

Ten Days to Justice synopsis

On January 27, 1984, U.S. Customs Inspector, Richard Latham was abducted at gunpoint from his border post. Dennis Harlan tells the true story of his friend’s brutal murder and documents the speedy resolution of a crime which crisscrossed the U.S./Mexican border for 10 breathtaking days. The  intensive investigation involved Mexican Federales, the Del Rio (Texas) Police Department, the Val Verde (Texas) District Attorney's Office, Texas Rangers, U.S. Customs, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The author takes great care to honor individual men and women in law enforcement who helped with the investigation. His detailed account is taken directly from the case history which was his responsibility to write. The book is a must-read for law enforcement officers, both veterans and those new to the profession. It also appeals to anyone with an inquiring mind and keen eye for well-documented accounts of true crime.
